“Well that’s a relief,” her mother had said at the end of Jess’s long explanations.
And for Jess, the arrangement was perfect.
Now, Skylark stood looking out over the stable door, as Rosie cycled into the yard.
“Hi Jess.” Rosie waved.
“Rosie…at last!” Jess grinned and walked over to her friend. “Now we’ve got time to talk…so what went on at Ash Hill? Whatever did happen to the Rychester girls?” she asked. “They’d been practising so hard. I can’t believe they didn’t do very well…although it’s brilliant you won…and of course I didn’t doubt for a moment you were in with a chance for the trophy,” she added quickly.
Rosie beamed with delight. “Well thanks Jess. I must admit, I was rather worried about the Rychester riders in the individual competition, but they completely fell to pieces when it came down to it. They’d all been arguing so much before the event that they didn’t know if they were coming or going. Only one of them was placed – a girl called Samantha.”
“Oh yes, I rode with her at Rychester,” Jess answered. “In fact, I bumped into her in town the other day. She didn’t tell me much though. Do you know what happened to Camilla Carlisle?” Jess asked urgently.
“Well, you should have seen her,” Rosie chortled. “She really lost her rag. I heard her arguing with her dad just before she was about to go into the ring. I suppose that’s what really did it for her. She was all fired up…completely lost her composure and I don’t think her palomino liked being hauled about one bit…refused three times at the wall, and almost bucked her off too.”
“Good for Apollo,” Jess laughed. “I wonder if Jasper will throw Camilla out of Rychester for not winning. Look, why don’t we get a drink in the tack room before the others arrive?”
“Good idea,” Rosie said. “Have you seen today’s paper, Jess?”
“No, what’s in it?” Jess was puzzled.
“I’ll show you,” Rosie smiled.
In the small and cosy tack room, Rosie and Jess huddled into worn easy chairs. Rosie spread the Daily Advertiser out on the table.
“Look!” Rosie stabbed at an article with her finger.
Carlisle’s Comeuppance! by Penny Webster, Jess read. Vrai Vert Cosmetics, who were last week exposed in these pages for lying about their animal testing procedures, are today facing more problems, the article continued. Protesters have mounted a constant vigil outside the company’s laboratory in Greater Rychester. The protest organizer, Barry Watkins, said last night that they would stay until everyone in the country was aware of the company’s conduct. A spokesman for the company said this will undoubtably have an effect on sales. Jasper Carlisle, owner of Vrai Vert Cosmetics was still unavailable for comment yesterday.
Jess sipped her juice thoughtfully. “Samantha said her dad’s going to take her horse away from Rychester, and that lots of other riders are thinking of leaving. She reckons Jasper might sell up. I wonder what will happen to all those lovely ponies then?”
“Let’s hope he sells the stables to someone who really cares about animals,” Rosie said. “Anyway, I think we’ve talked enough about Rychester, don’t you? Let’s talk about Sandy Lane for a change! Tell me, Jess, do you mind having to lend Skylark out on rides?”
“I thought I might do at first,” Jess said slowly. “But not now – Skylark will always be mine, whoever rides her.” Jess drained her glass and set it down. Glancing at the clock she gave a little cry. “Yikes, Skylark’s waiting, I should have tacked her up by now. See you later, Rosie.”
Jess waved a hasty goodbye to her friend and grabbed Skylark’s tack from the peg. Striding out into the yard she made her way to her pony’s stall.
“Hello Skylark,” she said as she opened the door and untethered the grey pony. “Laura Warren’s going to be riding you now. But save your energy for the 11 o’clock hack with me. I bet Rosie that we’d beat her and Pepper in a race. So I hope you’re ready for a good gallop!”
